Harris-Trump showdown: The first votes cast in the small town of New Hampshire

The first results of Election Day 2024 are in from Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, with former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris splitting the small town’s six votes.

The final count read by officials around 12:10 a.m. Tuesday was 3 for Trump and 3 for Harris.

The six citizens of Dixville Notch, which is a remote unincorporated township in the North Country region of New Hampshire, cast their ballots at midnight.

Before voters cast their ballots, three-time world accordion champion Cory Pesaturo performed an accordion rendition of the national anthem as voters held their hands over their hearts.

The small village began its midnight voting tradition in 1960. Four years ago, then-Vice President Biden swept all five votes cast in the small town near the US-Canada border on his way to victory from the White House on Trump.

All eligible voters in the township — which totaled six in New Hampshire’s first presidential primary in January — gathered at the Tillotson House in Dixville, where the polls remained open until everyone had cast their ballots.

Dixville Notch isn’t the only New Hampshire town to get national attention with midnight voting on Election Day.

The Harts Location—in the state’s White Mountains—began midnight voting in 1948. And Millfield, which is near Dixville Notch in New Hampshire’s North Country, also held midnight voting.

But in the 2024 general election, Dixville Notch was the only location in New Hampshire to hold midnight voting.

Every four years — during the state’s presidential primaries and general elections — reporters and media outlets from across the country and around the world descend on Dixville Notch to cover the midnight vote.

Tom Tillotson, the city’s longtime vote moderator, noted that “we get our 15 minutes of fame every four years.”
