Weather Extra runs the gamut

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The weather next week will range from fog and smoke on Election Day to the risk of tropical rain through Sunday. Until then, enjoy the mild weather as the growing season stretches into November (witness the cherry blossoms on the south side of Huntington).

On the eve of election day, an unusually warm air mass took over. Highs hit 80 degrees in most locations on Monday. It’s just a few degrees off the all-time record set in 1947. But Tuesday is another day with another chance to match the record of 85 set in ’47.

We now have 83 as the official forecast. There are now several brush fires smoking in the air in places. With a southerly wind blowing Tuesday, southern coal smoke will be able to spread slightly northward in the I-64 area. While smoke levels are not expected to be extreme (the area of the fires is not large at this time), any fire near a polling station could be affected by a foul smell.

Tonight, the sky is nice and mild with a stirring breeze. Low 58. Election Day will feature hazy sun with a brisk breeze and near-record temperatures. Mid 80s are plausible with a strong wind.

Wednesday and Thursday will see occasional showers as temperatures drop. Highs near 70 Wednesday then 60 degrees Thursday.

By Friday and Saturday, it’s back to mild sunshine, with highs near 70. Finally, by Sunday and Monday some soaking rain will come close enough to get our attention.
