IMPD ensures safety at polling places, voters share concerns – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Some voters told the I-Team 8 Monday they are concerned about safety at polling places.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says they prioritize safety. “You should feel safe and that’s our goal is to make you feel safe,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson, a department spokesman.

IMPD says they won’t have officers at the polls, but they will be just a phone call away if someone needs them. Meanwhile, officers will be working behind the scenes to identify any potential threats to people voting. “IMPD will respond as needed to any criminal activity. We ask that any citizens who vote respect the lines. It may be expectations, but if you have any concerns or see suspicious activity, contact a survey employee at the location or contact IMPD,” Thompson said.

Kalika Hysell and Jaiden West, two Hoosiers who stood in line at the City-County building to vote early Monday, both had concerns for their safety when they did so.

“I don’t even have to mention January 6th (2021), but that worried me because obviously these behaviors are prevalent,” Hysell said.

Still, they both decided it was important to vote. “I have to exercise my right and keep my rights,” Hysell said.

They were comforted knowing that the police would do their part to keep them and all other voters safe. “It’s nice to know they’re there in case we need them,” West said.

For voters on Tuesday, it’s important to know that wearing any clothing, buttons or signs promoting any candidate inside the polling station could lead to criminal charges. It’s called an election campaign.

State election officials say anyone charged with election rigging will be allowed to vote, but could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor, the most serious misdemeanor.
