Election results will be available as live activity on iPhone

Apple News will use Live Activities to follow live election results

If you don’t feel connected enough during the 2024 election, Apple News has a way to get up-to-the-second results on the lock screen and Apple Watch through Live Activities.

Apple originally introduced Live Activities as a way to whimsically take advantage of Dynamic Island and present live, up-to-date information to the user. It was handy for the moment to play music, sports scoresand active calls, but Apple News uses it for something a little more anxious.

Starting late Tuesday, users will be able to have a live feed from Apple News tracking the election results. So the lock screen will have a large, interactive widget that will launch on the latest election coverage, and the dynamic Island will continuously display the election number for each candidate.

So, while you’re condemned, scroll X and fight with relatives iMessageyou’ll have a constant reminder of exactly how things are going as Americans vote on their future. Of course, users can swipe away Dynamic Island content without closing Live Activity, which might help preserve some sense of sanity for a moment.

To enable US Election Results Live Activity:

  • Open Apple News
  • Tap the prominent “Watch Election 2024 Live” banner at the top of the page or under “Top Stories”
  • If you can’t find the banner, open the “Election 2024” Special Coverage section of the menu
  • A notification about enabling live activity will appear

Tap the banner again and the scheduled live activity will be disabled.

Live activities will appear on iPhone and iPad Lock screens, but only devices with a dynamic island will get the special UI. Apple Watch can also display Live Activity data in widget view.

Apple News had live activities for caucus results at the beginning of the year and has proven to be a useful way to keep track of events. While the stakes are much higher for real elections, the tool will be a great way to quickly visualize immediate results while staying away from polarizing news coverage.

It’s unclear how long Apple News will keep Live Activity active, as it could be several days before preliminary calls are made on the results, and final tallies won’t happen until December 11. The US election could be an interesting stress test for how users interact with the feature and how it holds up after hours of activity.
