Windows 11 build 26120.2213 (KB5045885) fixes multi-monitor desktop background and more

Microsoft today released a new preview of Windows 11. Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2213 (KB5045885) released on the Dev channel comes with changes to the Gamepad keyboard, it was disabled in this flight, but may return in a future release. The release also contains a number of fixes for the Start menu that correct the space between apps and more.

The first set of features in this release are available to insiders who have opted in to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update) and can be viewed below:

Changes and Improvements are rolled out gradually to the Dev Channel with the switch turned on*

(Input)

  • We’re starting to roll out a change where we now hide the IME toolbar when apps are in full screen mode for those who have the IME toolbar enabled and are typing in Chinese or Japanese.

  • We’ve temporarily disabled the new Gamepad keyboard layout for the on-screen keyboard in Windows 11, which started rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev channel with Build 26120.2130 to address some issues. This feature will be released again on a future flight.

The next set of fixes will roll out gradually to Windows Insiders who have set their switch to receive updates immediately.

Fixes are rolled out gradually in the Dev channel with switching enabled*

(start menu)

  • Fixed an issue affecting the reliability of the Start menu.

  • Fixed an issue that caused some insiders to see an unexpected amount of spacing between items in the list of applications in the Start menu.

  • Fixed an issue where the ability to pin/unpin apps in and from the Start menu was unexpectedly unavailable for some people.

(File Explorer)

  • Fixed an issue that caused items in the navigation panel to become very spread out (with unexpected padding between each item) for some people.

  • Fixed an underlying issue that caused RAW images taken in portrait mode to display unexpectedly in thumbnails in landscape mode.

(taskbar)

  • Made a change so that you now see a search box if the taskbar auto-hides when the taskbar search setting is set to “Search Box” (not an icon).

  • Fixed WIN+ not working in some cases on most recent flights.

  • Fixed an issue where the X button to close an app window in the taskbar was not working for some Insiders.

  • Fixed an issue on secondary monitors for left-aligned taskbar users where the text of taskbar widgets could overlap the date and time.

(Dev Drive)

(Other)

  • Fixed a core issue that could result in not being able to join a domain.

  • Fixed a core issue that could cause DISM/StartComponentCleanup to not work properly, get stuck at 71% and show error 6842.

  • Fixed a core issue that causes the Get-WindowsCapability command to sometimes enter a state where it fails unexpectedly until the computer is restarted.

  • Fixed an issue where rotation information about JPGs could not be queried via APIs (eg via PowerShell).

The following applies to everyone, regardless of how they set the switch to receive updates immediately or not.

Fixes for everyone in the Dev Channel

(Generic)

(Task Manager)

(Network)

  • Fixed a core issue affecting DHCP where unexpected duplicate options would fail lease acquisition, which could cause DHCP to fail to obtain an IP address, resulting in Wi-Fi not working.

  • Fixed an issue where DirectAccess would not work and could get stuck in a login state.

There is only one known issue, listed below.

Because there’s a lot to consider, below Microsoft explains how the Dev build may differ for users.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Dev channel

  • Windows Insiders in the Dev channel receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 by an activation package (Build 26120.xxxx).

  • Updates provided to the Dev channel are in a format that provides a preview of service technology improvements on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see https://aka.ms/CheckpointCumulativeUpdates.

  • Many features in the Dev Channel are implemented using Control function release technologystarting with a subset of insiders and growing over time as we monitor feedback to see how it goes before rolling it out to everyone in this channel.

  • For Windows Insiders in the Dev channel who want to be the first to receive features gradually extended to youyou can come back ON switch to get the latest updates as they are available through Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we’ll increase feature releases for everyone with the switch enabled. If you keep this toggle off, new features will be rolled out to your device over time as they’re ready.

  • The features and experiences included in these releases may never be released as we test different concepts and receive feedback. Features may change over time, be removed or replaced, and will never be released outside of Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences may appear in future versions of Windows when i’m ready.

  • Some features in active development that Windows Insiders preview may not be fully localized, and localization will occur over time as features are finalized. As you notice problems with localization in your language, please report these problems to us through the Feedback Hub.

  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels are parallel development paths for our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences appear first in the Beta Channel.

  • Check Flight hub for a full look at the build in which Insider channel.
