Ex-Maryland officer who had sex with arrested person faces 20 years for lying

BALTIMORE — A former Maryland police officer previously convicted of having sex with a teenage girl in custody is facing more legal trouble, this time in the federal system.

In February 2023, Martique Vanderpool was sentenced to three years behind bars in a state prison.

He wasconvicted of having sex with a teenage girl whom he stopped and arrestedbut acquitted of first and second degree rape.

Vanderpool was a member of the Fairmount Heights Police Department in September 2019 when he pulled over the girl in Capitol Heights.

She claimed she was picking up her son who was involved in an accident. It appears the teenager did not own the vehicle and only had a learner’s permit.

Vanderpool ordered the teenager out of the car, causing her to have an emotional breakdown. Another officer then handcuffed her and took her back to the police station.

At the same time, Vanderpool towed his car.

Once at the station, Vanderpool unshackled the girl, telling her to “make good.”

After having sex, Vanderpool took her to the tow yard to get the vehicle back.

Now the US Department of Justice is involved, alleging that Vanderpool lied in a police report about the chain of events that day, all in an effort to shield himself from criminal liability.

Last week, Judge Deborah Boardman of the US District Court in Maryland found Vanderpool guilty of obstruction of justice by falsifying a police report.

“The report intentionally omitted that the officers took the young woman from the scene to the police station; that Vanderpool had sexual relations with her; and that the officers had the car towed and later coordinated the release of the car to her,” the DOJ said in a statement. “The report also intentionally falsely stated that the car had been returned to the registered owner.”

Vanderpool is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

His partner at the time, Phillip Dupreewas recently convicted in an unrelated case of excessive force, violation of a citizen’s civil rights.
