Hearing for Cleveland officer accused of firing gun outside Lake County elementary school

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – The Cleveland police officer who allegedly opened fire outside Riverview Elementary last week is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Monday in Painesville Municipal Court.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s deputies, 34-year-old Alexander Sinclair was off-duty when he shot himself during a domestic violence incident in the school parking lot just after 9 a.m. on Oct. 31.

There were no serious injuries.

Sinclair is charged with felonious assault, two counts of kidnapping and discharging a firearm at or near a prohibited location.

Cleveland police confirmed Sinclair is a sergeant with the department and will be suspended without pay through his legal proceedings.

Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno posted on Facebook that the incident started off campus and moved onto campus when the suspect’s vehicle collided with another vehicle.

Sheriff Leonbruno confirmed that a single round was fired through the windshield of the second vehicle.

“Our school safety officer who is a deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, other sheriff’s deputies and area police and fire departments promptly responded to the scene and a person of interest was immediately taken into custody by our school safety officer school,” the Riverside venue. The school system posted on Facebook.

Students and staff at Riverview Elementary were locked down for about an hour

Sgt. Sinclair was hired in April 2015 by Cleveland Police and most recently worked in the Fifth District.
