A West Bengal court framed charges against RG Kar accused of raping and murdering Sanjoy Roy. Roy was remanded in custody as a suspect in brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at the end of the night shift.

The court also stated that the trial will begin on November 11.

The gruesome rape and murder of the trainee doctor led to nationwide unrest. There have been protests across the country, including by medical professionals, demanding better workplace safety.

In particular, the Supreme Court considered this issue and emphasized the need for increased security for medical professionals as well as improved working conditions.

The investigation of the case was handed over from the state police to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. The CBI has made Roy the sole accused in the case, while it has also arrested former director Sandip Ghosh for his alleged complicity in the murder.
