Nearly 70 employers, employees and toshao gathered in Mabaruma, Region 1 for a one-day seminar last week which was designed to build awareness of workplace legislation and promote adherence to the laws labor in Guyana.

Held in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), the seminar aimed to improve understanding of key labor regulations among local businesses and encourage a culture of compliance.

The Ministry of Labor noted that the participants covered a wide range of topics, including the national minimum wage, probationary periods, paid holidays, workplace safety standards, the fundamentals of co-operative and friendly societies, additional payments, redundancy pay, procedures of termination, inspections and registration – compliance with requirements and reporting of child labor incidents.

The event was chaired by Labor Minister Joseph Hamilton, who in his opening remarks outlined the aim of the seminar to provide both workers and employers with essential knowledge to address workplace challenges.

The minister underlined the government’s commitment to improving public access to vital services that support sustainable livelihoods and support workers’ rights.

“The Government of Guyana remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the rights and welfare of workers across the nation. No entity is exempt from the law; we maintain equal standards for both the private and public sectors,” said Minister Hamilton.
Focusing on safety, the Minister emphasized the importance of adhering to the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 and expressed hope that a move to a stronger safety culture will ensure all employees can return home in safety every day.

He encouraged continued collaboration with the ministry to promote this vision through ongoing training and awareness programs.

Minister Hamilton also urged participants to take advantage of the skills training opportunities offered through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), which equips workers with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the demands of Guyana’s evolving industries.

The seminar marked part of the ministry’s expanded engagements in 2024. More than 100 government ministries, agencies and private sector organizations participated in job-focused training sessions this year.
