There are many debatable topics surrounding the generational differences between Boomers, Millennials, Generation Z, and Gen X. However, a lesser known group is the Zillennials. Although not precisely defined, zillennials usually refer to those born between 1997 and 2002, who exist on top of Millennials (1981-1996) and Generation Z (2000-2012). This micro-generation is struggling to find their place in the workplace as their ideologies are shaped by both the ambitious nature of Millennials and the more balanced outlook of Gen Z.

Content creator Samantha Hart recently shared her experience of being a “cusper” in the workforce and highlighted the difficulties of being caught between these two generations. Her insights struck a chord with fellow zillennials, with one commenting that their experience is “perfectionism meets procrastination.”

Millennials who spoke to Business Insider shared similar sentiments, where they often find themselves caught between choosing to log off on time and feeling like they’re not getting enough or putting in overtime that ends up bothering them.

Lauren Farina, licensed psychotherapist and founding CEO of Invited Psychotherapy and Coaching, explained to Business Insider that Millennials often fall into what she calls a “high performance archetype.” This mindset pushes individuals towards a sense of doing things perfectly and a desire to please others. The disadvantages of this approach lead to risks such as exhaustion or anxiety.

Farina also noted that millennials may feel guilty or ashamed when they try to set boundaries like Gen Z because these boundaries may conflict with their other values. With both approaches, Zillenians struggle and find it difficult to balance their personal and professional lives.

While we’re discussing millennials, it’s also important to know that both Millennials and Generation Z face their own challenges in the job market. Millennials entered the workforce during the Great Recession of 2008 and faced high unemployment and low wages.

Gen Z, on the other hand, may have an even tougher time. A Washington Post analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows they are being hit hard by rising living costs, expensive home ownership and rising credit card debt.

This leaves the Zilenians caught in the middle, leading to pressure from both generations as they try to build their own careers and lives.

However, what Zillenians often see as struggles could actually be their strengths. Ilana Zivkovich, CEO and founder of organizational consulting firm Werq, told Business Insider that Millennials have a unique ability to connect with both older and younger colleagues, making them valuable in the workplace. work.

“Essentially, they are workplace ninjas who can bridge generational gaps that might otherwise create barriers. By identifying who these people are and encouraging them to fully express their perspective and beliefs, we can build the most holistic, connected and future-ready workforce,” added Zivkovich.
