Bhoiwada police arrest fugitive wanted for attempted murder and robbery after 28 years of manhunt

Mumbai: Bhoiwada police arrested. A fugitive accused of attempted murder and wanted in a robbery case was registered in 1998.

According to police information, the Additional Sessions Judge, Civil and City Sessions Court has issued a non-bailable warrant in a case of attempt to murder registered in 1995 under Section 307 of the IPC.

This non-bailable warrant was issued in the name of the accused, Mohammad Rafiq alias Baba Abdul Sattar Sheikh, a resident of Parel.

The warrant has been forwarded to Bhoiwada police station for execution. As the said accused had absconded in this case and was also wanted in Bhoiwada police station, FIRs were registered in 1998 under sections 342, 394, 326, 34 of IPC, a special team was formed to trace Rafiq.

This team first obtained and reviewed old records and gathered information about his friends and relatives mentioned in those documents. During the investigation, it was found that the accused was residing in Odisha and Jammu & Kashmir for some time. Further investigations revealed that he also frequently visited Mumbai to buy rare and antique items including chandeliers from Chor Bazaar under the jurisdiction of JJ Marg Police Station, items which Accused Rafiq then sold to other states.

Later, the team received reliable information that the accused was planning to visit his relatives in Antop Hill on October 24. Based on this information, the police team conducted surveillance at the location, where they identified a person matching the description. He was brought to the police station for questioning, where he confirmed his identity as Mohammad Rafiq alias Baba, after which senior officials were informed and he was formally arrested.
