Fireworks warning from Devon and Cornwall Police ahead of Bonfire Night

People in Devon and Cornwall are being warned about the responsible use of fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night on Tuesday.

Police said the fireworks were enjoyable for many, but could also be painful for some people and animals.

It said any “ongoing problems” with anti-social behavior should be reported.

Firefighters, HM Coastguard, National Grid and the Environment Agency have urged people to use fireworks responsibly.

Lucy Draycott, from Falmouth Coastguard, said people planning a large fireworks display near the coast should inform the coastguard.

“Sometimes red fireworks are commonly mistaken for flares,” she said.

National Grid said setting off fireworks too close to electrical infrastructure could cause serious injury and power outages.

“Smoke and heat from fires can also damage power lines, posing a danger to bystanders,” it said.

“That’s why it’s important that any celebrations take place away from the power grid.”

The Environment Agency said only dry, untreated and unpainted wood, along with small amounts of paper or cardboard should be used for fires.

It said burning the wrong type of waste could lead to a fine of up to £50,000 and people were urged to check for animals such as hedgehogs before lighting a campfire.

Kate Saint, from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said people should attend organized bonfire and firework events where possible.

“It’s a lot safer,” she said.

“In addition, it reduces potential pressure on the fire and rescue service at a time of year when we can be extremely busy.”
