12 Dems join GOP lawmakers to threaten UN funding over ‘continued hostility’ to Israel

FIRST ON FOX: More than 100 bipartisan lawmakers warn UN funding could be on the line if the international body retaliates against Israel for his war with Hamas.

“We are writing to express our deep concern about potential efforts by the Palestinian Authority to degrade Israel’s status at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and to deprive the State of Israel of its key privileges in the body,” a letter led by Rep. Mike Lawler . , RN.Y. and Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., are reading.

“Any downgrading of Israel’s status or status at the AGM will result in a corresponding downgrading of US financial, material and political support for the UN.”

The message, sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, was signed by 105 of their fellow Republicans and Democrats.

Signatories include all of the House Republican leadership, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. and 11 House Democrats in addition to Moskowitz—a testament to the significant support Israel continues to receive from Congress, particularly in the House of Representatives.

It also calls on nations to halt treaties and relations trade with Israel involving the Palestinian territories. .

They warned that the decision, particularly with regard to forcing Israel out of the West Bank, “undermines Israel’s right to defend itself” by Hamas after the Palestinian militant group’s Oct. 7 terror attack “without recognition or consideration of Israel’s legitimacy.” security concerns”.

“Congress has taken note of numerous UN actions intended to delegitimize Israel’s right to self-defense, raising serious questions about the future of US funding to the UN,” the lawmakers wrote. “We remind you that the US is the largest donor to the UN. Our contributions make up a third of the body’s collective budget.”

The letter also accused the UN of “definitely taking sides against Israel” instead of remaining a “neutral body”.

“We will not accept continued UN hostility towards our ally Israel,” they wrote.

Israel has enjoyed a steady level of support in Congress throughout its war in Gaza, even as a growing number of Democrats criticizes the Middle Eastern nation for dozens of Palestinian deaths caused while working to eradicate Hamas.

About half of the Democrats in Congress skipped Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to a joint session of the House and Senate earlier this year.
