Vicksburg’s Knight adds to the list of county football records set in 2024

Another week of the 2024 high school football season is in the books, and another notable Warren County record has fallen.

Vicksburg High running back Decorey Knight Jr. rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown in the a 41-27 loss to Columbus on Friday to break a 45-year-old school record for career yards.

Knight now has 2,960 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in three seasons at VHS. Sylvester Stamps, who went on to play six seasons in the NFL, held the record with 2,946 yards set from 1977-1979.

Knight, who played his freshman season at Warren Central before transferring to Vicksburg, also reached another milestone, becoming the 13th Warren County player to reach the 3,000-yard mark . Including his freshman season, Knight has 3,028 yards and 29 touchdowns. His WC totals do not count toward his career total at Vicksburg High.

Warren County records date back to 1970, as totals prior to that season are incomplete.

Vicksburg (0-9) has one game left in its season Thursday, Nov. 7 at Ridgeland.

Knight is the fourth player this season to break a major school or county record:

• Porter’s Chapel Academy’s Jase Jung broke the 30-year-old records for rushing yards and touchdowns — in both a season and a career — held by Warren Central’s Brian Darden established in 1994.

After rushing for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-22 win over Park Place in the MAIS Class 2A playoffs, Jung has 6,259 yards and 86 career touchdowns; and 3,549 yards and 47 touchdowns this season.

Jung also surpassed the PCA school record of 2,037 career yards that Earl Johnson set in the mid-1970s and set county single-game records for yards (532) and touchdowns (7) during his record season.

PCA (8-4) will play DeSoto School in the second round of the playoffs on Nov. 8.

• Warren Central kicker Jonah Artman surpassed the Warren County record of 23 career field goals set by Sam Thigpen of the Vikings from 1983 to ’85.

Artman threw a 43-yarder a 45-6 win over Callaway Friday was the 25th of his career.

• Warren Central’s Larry Reynolds Jr. set school records for sacks in a season (11) and career (19).

• Warren Central wide receiver Maddox Lynch set a school record for career receptions and is closing in on the mark for yardage.

Lynch has 96 receptions over the past three seasons, surpassing Trey Hall’s 88 from 2020-22. The Warren County record of 123 was set by Vicksburg High’s Tedarious Brown from 2013-15 and is likely out of reach, but Lynch could become just the fifth player since 1970 to catch 100 passes.

Lynch needs 90 yards to pass Demond Patton’s school record of 1,327 carries from 2017-19.

Warren Central (6-3) will conclude its regular season Thursday, Nov. 7 at Columbus, and then have at least one playoff game after that.
