Lowcountry non-profit gets away for a cause

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – A local non-profit organized this year’s second annual Shuck Fest, a fundraiser for the Lonon Foundation (Mon-Fri).

Their mission is to help children who have a parent or caregiver with a cancer diagnosis through resources and support.

Foundation founder Anna Lonon started Shuck Fest in honor of her late husband, Michael.

“I’m not going to be afraid of this disease and I don’t want anyone else to be. I want them to feel empowered to push back against it,” Lonon said.

The Lonon lost Michael to cancer about 10 years ago, and 2016 was when the foundation was born.

At that time, she had two children, a four-year-old and a three-month-old. She said that while she was grieving this loss, she knew how important support is in these tragic times.

“For Michael, this was a major concern for him. He wanted to know that we were going to be okay and that Jack and Harper were going to be okay. So, we are fine… but it took a lot of time, effort and support,” she said.

In efforts to help support other families, their foundation held a fundraising event while shucking oysters.

There was a live auction as well as other forms of bidding and donations. In fact, Lonon’s aunt was the first to increase her number when given the opportunity.

“So it was just a mission for her mom and me to help in any way we could. And we’re so proud of her and what she’s done,” said family member Sharyn Edwards.

Their goal for today’s event was to reach $50,000, and in the first hour they’ve already reached over $40,000 in fundraising.

“It was phenomenal to watch everyone. It’s just amazing to see people giving their hearts out to help people they don’t even know,” said Lonon.

Many people of all ages volunteered at the event, including her 16-year-old stepson Charlie Bhat.

“Doing that builds character in a person and you show the younger kids that by doing these things you can make them fun and you can really improve and become a better person,” Bhat said.

She said that going forward, she plans to grow her team so they can focus on their priorities, such as supporting child life support.
