YouTube is rolling out a new comment section feature, and users are hating it

YouTube is rolling out its new comment section feature to more users, despite many voicing their frustrations with it.

Comments hyperlinked to YouTube are becoming more common in video comment sections, serving as a somewhat spammy method to direct users to additional information about certain topics or interests.

Although it was launched as a limited experiment in 2023, these hyperlinked comments are now seen more frequently on the platform, as noted 9to5Google.

When someone posts a comment that relates to various topics or information on YouTube, you’ll notice a blue hyperlink with a small glasses icon. This indicates that the word or phrase is clickable.

YouTube says that hyperlinked comments help “reduce friction” in learning about a topic or content. When you click on a hyperlink, a search starts that directs you to a new page, while the mini-player allows you to continue watching. But as a commenter, you can’t add or change links.

However, YouTube mentioned in their Creator Insider 2023 announcement video that creators have the option to remove links from their video comments if they wish.

The current implementation has drawn criticism, with one user writing: “It’s getting to the point where YouTube doesn’t care about our feedback and makes some random adjustments we DON’T NEED.”

Another said: “This is so stupid and potentially dangerous I hate it. I accidentally clicked on it so often, so unnecessarily annoying.”

“If a commenter uses a word I don’t understand, I’ll copy it and look it up myself. Don’t hyperlink everything as an ad,” added a third.

This is just the latest YouTube feature that has sparked backlash from users, after the dreaded break screen ads. The platform is also testing a new homepage layout that hides date and view countanother change that faced criticism.
