2024 was the year of unexpected celebrity news, with one of the most surprising being how Prince Harry and Meghan MarkleThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex bought a house in Europe.

Many have questioned why the sudden home purchase, but now former staffers are revealing why Harry and Meghan might have made the surprise move.

According to former King Charles staff butlerGrant Harrold told him New York Post that the pair had bought a house in Portugal because life in the US was not “what they thought it would be”.

“But maybe living in the States wasn’t what they thought it would be and that could be why they’re now allegedly making their way back towards the UK,” he added. “There is no obvious reason to choose Portugal as a place to live, but let’s not forget that it is not unusual for royals to settle abroad.”

He is not wrong; Princess Eugenie also has a home in Portugal, which many believe is how the Sussexes moved in the first place.

For those who need a recap, the Sussexes bought a house in CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Clubin Lisbon, Portugal for just under $5 million. Their neighbors will be Eugenie and eventually The Clooneys.

Now, it doesn’t look like they’ll be unloading their Montecito home anytime soon, but it’s true that Harry and Meghan have been hit with a lot of blows since leaving the royal family, between media circuses and trademark issues over Meghan’s rebranding. However, only time will tell if this will be their primary residence or a second home, which most huge celebrities have.
