Important 2024-2025 NYC Public School Calendar Update: Here Are the Key Dates to Know

New York City public school students have been back in class for more than two months into the 2024-2025 school year, and there are some key updated dates to keep in mind after the city added a new day off to the calendar.

The first full day of school for public school students was Thursday, September 5th. For those already counting down the days until summer, the last day of school is Thursday, June 26, 2025.

The city Department of Education Academic Calendar it includes about two dozen days off between the first and last day of class.

The calendar provides time off for religious holidays such as Good Friday, Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr, as well as week-long breaks for winter break, midwinter break and spring break, which include Christmas and Easter. Diwali was also added as a public school holiday.

The school calendar also allows time off for Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth.

The city is also giving students a day off on Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 5.

Dates for parent-teacher conference days for elementary, middle, and high schools are also listed on the calendar.

In addition, students and teachers will have even more free time for the winter break, as Monday, December 23, will now be an additional day off.

The school calendar, previously listed, would see winter break begin on Tuesday, December 24, which is also Christmas Eve – requiring students and teachers to come to school on Monday, December 23.
