DVLA announces plans for huge change to driving license rules within months

The DVLA has confirmed plans to launch a new online tool within months, which will offer drivers an additional driving license service from the comfort of their own home.

Officials will introduce the ‘Share My Driving Licence’ service through their online service for drivers and vehicles in March 2025.

The new software will allow customers to generate share codes on their account, which may be required by some businesses.

Driving license information may be requested by car insurance companies or even when applying for a job.

This will allow businesses to quickly check a driver’s driving record and license expiration date.

Information such as how many penalty points the person may have, any disqualifications and a list of vehicles the person may drive is listed.

Writing in their 2024/25 Business PlanThe DVLA said: “This year we will be introducing a new ‘Share My Licence’ service through the account.

“This will allow customers to generate a share code, which can be used for a variety of purposes, including confirming license information for car rental companies.”

Drivers can currently obtain a verification code online or by contacting DVLA head office in Swansea.

To obtain a verification code, drivers will need to provide their driving license number, National Insurance number and postcode listed on the photo card.

The DVLA is also aiming to exceed its 90% target for digital and automated interactions this year.

DVLA chief executive and accountant Julie Lennard stressed that DVLA remained committed to encouraging road users to try online digital services.

She commented: “We want our customers to be able to access our multi-channel services as quickly and easily as possible.

“Our digital service numbers are extremely popular with our customers.

“In the last reporting year, we handled 95.5 million transactions with individual customers, of which 84% were processed through our digital channels.

“Digital is an area we continue to focus on and over the past year we have continued to invest time and effort in building the right IT operating model to ensure we have the right structure to continually improve our digital services.”
