Hong Kong prisons chief vows to stand up fearlessly against violence after officer attack

Hong Kong’s Correctional Services Department (CSD) has vowed to fearlessly stand up to any form of violent intimidation following a recent gang attack on an officer, its commissioner said after visiting the injured employee.

Correctional Services Commissioner Wong Kwok-hing condemned Sunday’s violent attack during a visit to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, while confirming that the officer was in a stable condition.

“The CSD has strongly condemned lawless violence and we believe that the attackers have blatantly challenged the rule of law and undermined social order,” he said.

“Every colleague of the Department of Correctional Services is a law enforcement professional and will never fear any form of violent threat.

“The CSD will maintain its position and act in accordance with the law to ensure that the institution maintains order and discipline.

But Wong declined to explain whether the officer was attacked because of a personal dispute with the attackers, saying the case was still under investigation and it was inappropriate to reveal more details.

“We will continue to cooperate with police inquiries and hope they arrest the perpetrators of this crime as soon as possible,” he said.
