A group of armed robbers stormed Adabraka, a suburb of the country’s capital, Accra, on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Viral videos of the incident show at least five well-built men armed with various types of weapons. The men can be seen firing shots into the air as they load confiscated items, including bags of money, into a car. They are also seen ordering a man in a black tank top, who had his hands up, around.

CCTV footage of the event

CCTV footage captured how a gang of armed robbers raided a jewelery store in Adabraka, Accra and made off with bags of money. In the footage, several men are seen loading what appear to be bags of cash into a parked wagon.

Shortly after the car starts moving, a 4×4 vehicle cuts in front of it. Suddenly, masked gunmen holding AK-47s and other weapons get out of the 4×4 and attack the driver and a passenger in the car, confiscating all the bags of cash from their vehicle.

In several videos online, the robbers can also be seen firing a warning shot and throwing money into the air, presumably to cover their escape.

Police on Manhunt

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt following the robbery. In a statement issued on 2 November 2024, the police confirmed that the incident involved a group of armed men who targeted a jewelery shop and injured at least one person during their attack.

The police undertook to capture the thieves.

“Police are searching for a gang of armed robbers who attacked a jewelery shop in Adabraka, Accra on Saturday, November 2, 2024, where one person was injured,” the statement said. He concluded: “We would like to assure the public that we will certainly receive them and bring them to justice.”

A deputy is speaking

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, has responded to the incident, which occurred in her constituency.

The MP expressed concern over the increasing number of armed robbery attacks in the area, noting that this incident was the second in less than four months at the same location. Dr Rawlings said he would discuss the matter with the relevant security authorities to implement measures to reduce such attacks.

“For my part, I am following the Ministry of Interior and National Security regarding what is happening here. We’re securing people in the community without making sure their security is guaranteed, I don’t think that’s enough,” Dr Rawlings said.
