New Delhi: Two people died of suffocation after a massive fire broke out in a furniture area in west Delhi’s Kirti Nagar area in the early hours of Sunday, officials said. The two were sleeping in a room on the terrace of the godown, where the fire started, they said.

“A call about the furniture fire was received at around 4.25am on Sunday and six fire crews were rushed to the scene. Two people were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital,” said a Delhi Fire Service (DFS) official. The fire broke out on the terrace of the building, the police said.

“The premises were thoroughly checked and a room on the terrace was found locked from the inside. The teams broke down the door and found two people inside. They were rushed to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead,” the statement said. a police statement.

The two men, Atul Rai (45), a laborer, and Nand Kishor (65), a rickshaw puller, were pronounced dead at the hospital. Rai worked at the godown and also slept there. Prima facie, they died of suffocation, it was said. The forensics team was called in to determine the cause of the fire. Legal action will be initiated accordingly, the police said.
