Charges filed in connection with attack on woman in Kansas City park

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A man has been charged with the robbery and assault of a woman who tried to enjoy lunch at a Kansas City park over the summer.

Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed Wednesday, Oct. 30, that Curtis A. Long, 51, of Kansas City, was charged with assaulting a woman inside his vehicle.

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department said that on June 26, law enforcement officers were called to a city park with reports of a disturbance. When they arrived, they found a woman who said she had been eating in her vehicle when Long approached and got into the passenger seat.

Investigators noted the woman did not know Long and when he began lighting a substance in a glass pipe, she told him to get out of the vehicle. In response, Long allegedly tried to choke the woman before telling her to take off her clothes. When she screamed, Long ran from the vehicle, but not before taking the phone and keys.

Law enforcement officials indicated that Long threw the woman’s keys before he fled the park. Nearby witnesses were able to help the woman and call 911. DNA evidence found in the woman’s car also pointed to Long as the attacker.

As of Saturday, Nov. 2, Long remains behind bars in Jackson County, Missouri, on charges of first-degree robbery and assault with no bond listed. A bond review hearing has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m., with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 27 at noon. No other information has been released.
