Valencia floods: La Liga managers criticize decision to play weekend games

Several La Liga managers believe matches in the Spanish top flight should have been called off this weekend following floods in Valencia that have killed at least 211 people.

Torrential rains in the Valencia region on Monday caused floods that destroyed bridges, covered cities in mud, cut off communities and left them without water, food or electricity.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the death toll was expected to rise further.

Real Madrid’s match at Valencia and Rayo Vallecano’s trip to Villarreal have both been postponed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Atletico Madrid’s home game against Las Palmas is set to kick off at 13:00 GMT on Sunday and manager Diego Simeone criticized the RFEF during his pre-match press conference.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Simeone said.

“What is happening is very difficult. The people who came out to the streets to help, who with their shovels and tools are trying to collaborate, that speaks very well about the country, about the people, and we want to help where we can.

“There are people having a really bad time, it’s very sad and they tell us to move on and here we are, moving on.”

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick echoed Simeone’s thoughts when speaking ahead of Sunday’s 15:15 GMT match against Catalan rivals Espanyol.

“If it were me, I could do it (suspend the sport) because it’s an incredible tragedy for Valencia and Spain as a whole,” Flick said.

“I spoke to (Barcelona striker) Ferran (Torres), who is from the area, and it is not easy to decide whether the game should be played or not.

“For me it’s a tragedy. There was something similar in Germany three years ago, it’s horrible. We will do everything we can to help. The rest is for La Liga to decide.”

Girona beat Leganes 4-3 on Saturday and coach Michel admitted it was hard to enjoy the result.

“I wasn’t angry, but we shouldn’t celebrate anything because this match shouldn’t have been played,” Michel said.

Miguel Gutierrez opened the scoring for Girona and held up a ‘Forca Valencia’ shirt in support of the region.

“The first shirt I picked up was for my friend Enrique, whose mother went missing. She was swept away by the current, and they’re still trying to find her,” Gutierrez said.

“I think the game takes a backseat. Apart from Madrid, the city where I have spent the most time and where I have the most friends and connections is Valencia.

“I can assure you I’ve seen videos and been on video calls with friends and it’s a total disaster, an absolute nightmare.”
