One dead in plane crash near Crossville, sheriff says

FENTRESS COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The National Transportation Safety Board said an investigation is underway after a plane crashed Friday near Crossville in the Wilder community of Fentress County.

According to preliminary information from the FAA, the crash occurred northwest of Crossville Memorial Airport around 9:20 a.m. CT Friday. Only the pilot was on board at the time of the accident.

Sheriff Michael Reagon of the Fentress County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WVLT News that a body was recovered from the scene and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for identification.

NTSB officials said the crash involved a Cessna 150, which is a small aircraft capable of carrying a pilot and a passenger.

Reagon said the plane, which was supposed to fly to Illinois, crashed after refueling at the airport in Crossville. In addition, Reagon said the flight information did not match what was found at the scene.

The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation with the assistance of the FAA. Officials said an NTSB investigator was expected to be on the scene Saturday.

Additional information has not been released.
