Each small town comes with its own unique charm and sense of community.

While these are important factors in deciding where to call home, each small town’s livability is also an important component, including cost of living, quality of education and healthcare, local economy, and more.

A recent report from WalletHub ranked the best small towns in the United States in 2024, and three locations familiar to Delawareans made the list.

America’s Best Small Towns

WalletHub compared more than 1,300 US cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on “45 Key Housing Indicators.” Indicators are grouped into the following categories, with values ​​based on US Census Bureau data and other sources:

The 45 metrics in the six categories are weighted separately on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the most favorable conditions for small-town residents. Weighted averages for all metrics determine each city’s overall score and placement in the final ranking.

Of the three Delaware cities featured, Newark was the only one to place in the top 50 percentile. Newark received an overall score of 58.99, ranking 1,003 for affordability, 1,152 for economic health, 648 for education and health, 34 for quality of life, and 1,045 for safety. The city is in the 58th percentile.

In the bottom 50th percentile are Wilmington and Dover.

Wilmington is in the 41st percentile and received an overall score of 56.72. The city ranked 1,115 for affordability, 994 for economic health, 751 for education and health, 15 for quality of life, and 1,293 for safety.

Dover is in the 13th percentile and received an overall score of 51.01. The city ranked 992 for affordability, 1,237 for economic health, 998 for education and health, 128 for quality of life, and 1,270 for safety.
