Roncalli’s physical playing field fuels Brebeuf’s high-value offense in sectional semifinal win

The Roncalli student section and cheerleaders dressed as construction workers for Friday night’s Class 4A Section 22 semifinal at Brebeuf Jesuit. A sign on the fence declared the field a “royal work area”.

Against that backdrop, Roncalli played like a team on a mission, rushing for 371 yards en route to a 55-27 victory over then-No. 7 Brebeuf. The Royals (6-4) will play Bishop Chatard (8-2) next week for the sectional title.

“The guys have been training hard all week and they wanted to follow that up.” Roncalli coach Sam Otley said. “They wanted to play a physical football game and the offensive line played with a chip on their shoulder that they developed every week.”

Here’s how Roncalli’s victory happened:

Turning point: Brebeuf’s first game went 15 plays and 82 yards but yielded no points. The Braves had first and goal at the Roncalli 3 on a 7-yard run by CJ Harris. After Harris went 2 yards on first down, the Royals forced an incompletion and stopped Harris twice at the goal line. Roncalli then came back and drove 99 yards in 18 plays – aided by a brutal punter’s call – and took more than 10 minutes off the clock. Collin Ash finished the drive with a 5-yard run to give Roncalli a 7-0 lead. The Royals never trailed.

Game Player: Collin Ash and Zach Dozier said they’ll give donuts to the Roncalli offensive line Saturday morning. Keep it up guys. But Dozier and Ash did more than their part. Dozier ran for 172 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and Ash added 159 yards and three TDs on 19 carries. The two finished aggressively all night, out-rebounding Brebeuf defenders. Brebeuf quarterback Maverick Geske finished his high school career by going 23-for-38 for 289 yards and four TDs. He can throw it.

The game: A little tip of the hat here, maybe a sneaky play late in the first half by Rudy Schoettle. Sometimes special teams in high school football can be a little erratic. But Roncalli punt returner Schoettle made a smart play to pick up a punt and return it 34 yards to the Brebeuf 28 with 4 seconds left in the half. On the next play, Gavin Louthain booted a 45-yard field goal to send Roncalli to halftime with a 24-13 lead. Brebeuf never got closer the rest of the way.
