Violent crime is doubling on Baltimore’s west side, shocking residents

Baltimore’s violent crime rate may be down, but on Baltimore’s Westside… the violent crime rate has doubled.

“It discourages me more than anything,” said Doc Cheatham, president of the Matthew Henson Neighborhood Association of West Baltimore.

According to city police records, violent crimes in the western police district are up 143 percent from this time last year.

Homicides are up 130%.

Non-fatal shootings up 76%

Rapes on the Westside are up 357%.

“It’s scary because we were supposed to have this big drop in violence and crime and it does the exact opposite and goes in the opposite direction,” Cheatham said.

The West Quarter is where the city first launched its Gang Violence Reduction Strategy.

It also houses two Safe Streets offices.

Earlier this year, Mayor Brandon Scott blamed the city’s redistricting plan, which expanded the population of the western police district, for the spike in crime.

Still, longtime west side stragglers insist it’s the result of years of neglect by city leaders.

“Somebody’s not doing something right, and there’s a bunch of somebody’s stuff,” Cheatham said.
