Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman chokes up thanking fans for support during son’s illnesses

Although the Dodgers had to work their way through some classic LA traffic to get to the stadium during their parade, they didn’t seem to have any anger when they spoke to their fans.

Freddie Freeman, who hit multiple home runs during the World Series despite a sprained ankle and torn costal cartilagehe radiated pride and joy as he spoke to the fans. “I have one leg, but I have a whole group of guys who have had my back all year,” said the 35-year-old. Fans, including what appeared to be the first baseman’s oldest son in the crowd, began chanting “MVP” as Freeman spoke.

The athlete got a little emotional when he referred to his son Max’s main health scarethat shook his family during the summer. (The 3-year-old was hospitalized with Guillaine-Barre syndrome in late July.)

“When I came back three months ago after my son got sick, you guys showed up for my family and me,” he said, to cheers from the crowd. “It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had on the field.” His voice shook a little as he continued, “I was so moved. I did everything I could to get on this court for you guys and I’m glad I did because now we have a championship. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I can’t wait to come back next year.”

At the end of his speech, the camera panned to Freeman’s wife, Chelseagrinning into the crowd. Besides Max, the The MLB star and his wife are the parents of Brandon (also 3 and born at the same time as Max via surrogate) and Charlie, 8, who appeared to be in attendance at the celebration.
