Appeal for historical items stolen from Casa Montacute

We are publishing images of a number of items stolen during a burglary at a National Trust property in Somerset last week.

Items including a silver centerpiece for the dining room (an epergne), a pair of French Empire ormolu chandeliers, a pewter mug and saucer, plus some china were stolen from Montacute House, which is located between Martock and Yeovil.

The break-in happened on Tuesday, October 22 at around 11pm.

Dedicated Investigating Officer Dave Pepper said: “Officers attended overnight when the burglary was reported to us and found that entry had been forced to gain access to the property.

“We have carried out CCTV inquiries and spoken to a number of people who live nearby as part of our ongoing investigation. We have also provided additional security tips to deter any such similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“The stolen items are historic and we are keen to help reunite the National Trust with them. We would like to hear from anyone with information on their whereabouts.”

Keri Phillips, National Trust managing director for Montacute House, said: “This has been a very distressing incident for our staff and volunteers.

“The stolen items were a valued part of the collection, particularly the epergne, which is of exceptional importance, having been commissioned by Edward Phelips, one of the owners of Montacute House, in 1818.th century.”

She continued: “The National Trust takes incidents like this extremely seriously and is continually reviewing the security arrangements at our sites, working closely with local police forces.”

If anyone has information about this theft or the whereabouts of the items, please call 101 quoting the crime reference number 5224279138 or contact us online.
