Tyler, The Creator advocated releasing music on weekdays, not weekends

Tyler, The Creator has scored his first UK number one album with Chromakopia, despite only being available for four of the last seven days.

The Official Chart Company starts counting sales and streams at 00:01 on Fridays, when most major label projects are released.

But Tyler, ever the maverick, released his eighth studio album at 6 a.m. EST Monday, three days after he began chasing the weekly charts.

The 33-year-old, whose full name is Tyler Gregory Okonma, previously said there was a lot of “passive listening” on weekends and advocated weekday releases.

last year, Tyler told Canadian music journalist Nardwuar: “I think if you take it out during the week, man, that commute to work or that commute to school … you really have that hour, 30 minutes to really sink in and really listen.”

He suggested that most of the music listened to at the weekend happens at places like parties or in the background while people are relaxing, which he said often means people aren’t listening as closely to the music.

But in the same interview, he admitted that it might be a “bad idea” to miss almost half of the week’s streams and sales.

The new releases appeared on Monday, after the previous week’s chart had been announced on Sunday night, but it was changed to Friday in July 2015.

It was part of a global strategy that saw the music industry launch New Music Fridays in more than 45 countries after consumer research found fans preferred to listen to music at weekends when they felt they had more time.

But music chart analyst Chris Molanphy agrees with Tyler’s stance.

“I never liked that (weekend release) date,” he told BBC News. “It felt weird that we were competing with movies and all that.”

Movies are also predominantly released in theaters towards the end of the week, usually on Fridays.

Despite the dominance of streaming, a full album’s physical and download sales can play a large role in an album’s chart success due to how they are weighted.

If Chromakopia also reaches the US charts, it will be Tyler’s third number one album, despite never having managed a top 10 single.

On his website, fans can purchase various vinyl versions of the new album, bundled with original merchandise.

“He’s a marketing genius,” Molanphy said. “Tyler knows how to package his albums, his covers are beautiful to look at.”

A report from last year found that only 50% of vinyl consumers own a record player, making the cover particularly important.

Tyler’s 2019 album Igor, with its striking pink design, stayed on the Billboard vinyl chart for 160 weeks.

The rapper has previously won the Grammy for Best Rap Album twice, and four of his previous albums reached the top 10 in the UK.

However, not everyone was as complimentary about Chromakopia’s release on Monday morning.

Music business journalist Eamonn Forde called it a “marketing gimmick”.

“The whole point of streaming is you have to get as much power as you can in a top week,” he said. “Every minute counts.”

Even if the trick worked for Tyler, subsequent artists may experience the law of diminishing returns.

“Hip-hop is notorious for trying new sales tactics,” Molanphy said.

“They may set a pattern for other artists to follow, but not everyone is Tyler the Creator.”

On this week’s singles chart, Gigi Perez took No.1 with Sailor Song, ending Sabrina Carpenter’s Taste hit’s nine-week reign.
