A mass shooting in Orlando leaves 2 dead and 6 injured

A mass shooting in Orlando overnight left two people dead and six others injured, authorities have confirmed.

In a news conference this morning, the Orlando Police Department confirmed that a teenage suspect has been arrested. They identified him as Jalen Dwayne Edgar, a 17-year-old boy arrested in 2023 for theft.

The deadly shooting happened at two locations in the central Florida city.

The first shots were fired shortly after 1 a.m. near the intersection of Central Boulevard and Orange Boulevard, according to police. Officers saw that the second location was on Orange Avenue, south of Washington Street.

“We replayed the camera (and) saw how the shooting happened,” Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said. “(We) published his description immediately; then the officers saw the shooting happen and shot multiple people right there.”

The ages of the victims were between 18 and 39 years old.

Police have not released a motive for the shootings. Investigators are currently interviewing Edgar to determine if it was a random shooting or a targeted attack.
