More turkeys in Northeast Ohio than any other part of the state

(WKBN) – A summer survey of wild turkeys showed more sightings in Northeast Ohio – by a wide margin – than in any other section of the state.

The survey by the Ohio Division of Wildlife found 874 turkeys in Northeast Ohio. The next closest were 291 sightings in southeastern Ohio. The survey also showed Northeast Ohio with 3.1 baby turkeys per hen, just above the state average of 2.9.

According to the Division of Wildlife, Ohio’s turkey population recovery is “among the state’s most notable wildlife success stories.”

Wild turkeys were extirpated in 1904 and reintroduced in the 1950s. By 1999, they were found in all 88 counties.
