Parents consider home care after Building Blocks closes

Days after the announcement that Building Blocks Daycare will close its doors, some local parents are now considering transitioning their children to home providers.

Building Blocks parent Gabriela Garza told me that parents will now have to use their own judgment when choosing a home care provider.

Gabriela Garza said parents rely heavily on the state to complete background checks at preschools. But now, working parents will be burdened with the task of creating their own screening process.

Garza said the process can be overwhelming for parents placing their children in the hands of someone new.

“Can we trust the verification process we do ourselves?” Garza said. “There’s no way for us to go in and make sure they’re following everything we say or aligning with state regulations.”

Garza said that when choosing a provider, she will consider who all lives in the home, the age range of the children being supervised and whether the provider has pets.

Parents can check that home providers have all the proper licenses by going to the Department of Children and Families. website and supplier search by name.
