House of Ruth honors the lives of victims of domestic violence

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The National Domestic Violence Hotline says twelve million women and men are victims of some form of domestic violence each year.

This year alone, 12 lives have been claimed in our area through these crimes.

House of Ruth held a candlelight vigil to honor those lives lost to domestic violence.

Not only was it time to remember these faces who are no longer with us, but also to reflect on what more can be done to save more lives.

As part of the event, two DV survivors came and spoke about their experience and how important it is not to be silent when you notice this problem.

“I had a relationship with the father of my children,” said domestic violence survivor Sommer Warren. “I tried to break it off once I got to college and that’s when the domestic violence started. Physically mentally, I broke.”

“When he hit me about three months after we first got married, I thought for sure it was my fault,” said domestic violence survivor Janis Wells. “If only I could learn how to be a better wife sooner, she wouldn’t have to do this. Let’s talk about domestic violence. Let’s put the blame exactly where it should be. on abusers who choose to do so.”
