Investigation into Walmart employee’s oven death raises questions

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (FOX Carolina) – After the body of a Walmart employee was found in an industrial oven, people on the internet are raising questions about how the tragic death could have happened.

On October 19, Gursimran Kaur, 19, was found dead in the bakery at the Canadian Walmart store where he worked.

Kaur and her mother worked together at the store on Mumford Road. A GoFundMe organized by the Sikh Maritime Society for Kaur’s family, which raised nearly $200,000, said her mother became concerned after not seeing the teenager for an hour and finding her “burnt to death” in input furnace.

The Walmart store has been closed since Kaur’s death.

Conformable CBC CanadaNova Scotia’s Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration issued a stop-work order at the bakery, but later lifted the order. The agency said bakery operations can safely resume when Walmart chooses to reopen.

TikTok videos of Walmart employees demonstrating safety measures with walk-in ovens in their stores have gone viral, raising questions about how the tragedy occurred. ChrisBreezie559 posted a video that has received more than 28 million views of the oven at work, demonstrating that it lights from the outside and has a hard-to-close door.

Another TikTok video with over 2 million views shows a Walmart worker explaining at her store, the door doesn’t close unless forced to close and the oven door has an inside handle.

Halifax Regional Police has released no new information since the initial report on Kaur’s sudden death and said the investigation may “take a significant amount of time.”

Police have asked people to be careful about sharing speculation about the tragedy on social media.

The Hindustan Times reports that Kaur and her mother are originally from Ludhiana in the Indian state of Punjab. They reportedly moved from the UK to Canada in 2021 and worked at Walmart for two years.

Kaur’s father and brother remain in India.
