Apache County Council votes to oust embattled county attorney

APACHE COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) — The Apache County Board of Supervisors voted to remove beaten county prosecutor from the office.

County Attorney Michael Whiting was indicted by a grand jury in August on felony and misdemeanor charges related to misuse of public money and threatening political opponents of his wife, County Schools Superintendent Joy Whiting.

Joy was charged with felony misuse of public funds and one count of conflict of interest.

The three-person supervisory board met on Thursday in St. Johns, Arizona, and voted to vacate his office, effective Friday. On the same day, his law license is to be placed on a temporary suspension by the Arizona State Bar while investigating a complaint against him.

Both Whitings appear on the ballot unopposed, but Michael Whiting has two challengers who are write-in candidates.

If Michael Whiting were to win the election next week, he would not be able to take office or be paid if his law license is not in good standing.

For 16 years, Michael was the county attorney in front of Apache County law enforcement.

The Whitings, along with Michael’s sidekick Daryl Greer, have it all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Arizona’s Family Investigates previously reported that senior prosecutor four of his employees filed injunctions against him, advocating harassment. Warrants said Whiting and two of his employees began driving to their homes after demanding his resignation. It happened after investigators executed a search warrant at Whiting’s home and office.
