Electric vehicle battery health rating service launched by BCA

BCA introduces a new electric vehicle (EV) battery health assessment service, a first for the remarketing industry.

BCA reports record levels of used electric vehicle sales in 2024 and is on track to sell more than 40,000 units in the next 12 months in a market that continues to grow.

BCA’s Battery Health Grade provides an at-a-glance view of the health of an electric vehicle’s traction battery.

Each vehicle is given a rating from AE accompanied by the numbered score of an Aviloo Battery “Flash Test”, an analysis tool for determining battery condition and detecting battery defects for used electric vehicles.

The manufacturer-independent test is performed by connecting the Aviloo test box to each vehicle’s on-board diagnostic (OBD) interface.

This, BCA says, provides a test report that shows the traction battery’s remaining capacity as a score between 0 and 100 and displays “red flags” for faulty battery modules.

The BCA battery health rating is displayed in a quick reference format on the vehicle details page, vehicle search results and Live Bidding screens.

Buyers can now determine the health of an electric vehicle’s traction battery, enabling informed, quick and safe auction decisions, the BCA said.

BCA buyers have access to the full Flash Test post-sale report, which can be used in the retail process, helping sellers build more trust and transparency with their customers and speed up the sales process.

BCA Chief Operating Officer Stuart Pearson said: “EV volumes in our online auctions are growing significantly year-on-year and we continue to refine our remarketing process in support of this sector.

“Thanks to our continued investment in infrastructure and support services, our customers remain in the best position when it comes to selling or buying used electric vehicles.”

Marcus Berger, CEO of test provider Aviloo, added: “The Aviloo Battery Health Test covers 95% of all available EV brands, which means it is a great fit with BCA’s extensive online remarketing programs in the UK and Europe.

“Building increased trust, along with a transparent process, remains key to the continued development of the used electric vehicle landscape, and we are very pleased to partner with BCA on this initiative.”

Pearson continued: “BCA’s new battery health rating helps our buyer customers bid on electric vehicles with full confidence and make more informed decisions when buying.

“The service offers absolute transparency with unbiased testing and grading, providing a reusable report that will further assist the retail process.

“For our sellers, the report will provide the opportunity to resolve any issues prior to the sales event, along with optimizing residual values by removing any uncertainty reduction.”

He concluded: “BCA’s most successful EV buyers understand the market well and use their product knowledge to dispel the myths surrounding EVs, giving customers increased confidence.

“This new initiative will provide valuable additional support to our customers as the used EV market continues to grow and help everyone in the resale process when these vehicles are sold at retail.”
