Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan, leaving one dead and dozens injured

A powerful typhoon, Kong-rey, made landfall on the main island of Taiwan on Thursday afternoon, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration says the typhoon moved northwest after making landfall in eastern Taitung County at around 1:40 p.m. local time on Thursday. The storm is expected to move over Taiwan and reach the Taiwan Strait in the evening.

Rains and winds have intensified as the storm approaches. Authorities say a 56-year-old woman died when a falling tree crushed a small truck in central Nantou County.

At least 73 people were injured across large areas, including Taichung City and Changhua County in central Taiwan.

In every city and county on Thursday, local authorities took action, urging people not to commute to work or school.

In the northern city of Taipei, stations and bus stops were deserted even during the morning rush hour.

More than 30 percent of international flights and flights between Taiwan and China were canceled, along with all flights between Taiwan and other islands.

Weather officials are urging residents to remain on high alert as strong winds and heavy rain are likely to continue into Friday morning.
