Haiti’s crime rate rises by over 1,200 killed in three months

More than 1,200 people were killed from July to September in Haiti – and a 27 percent increase from the previous quarter in the Caribbean country, which has been ravaged by gang violence.

According to a UN report released Wednesday: “1,223 people were killed and 522 injured as a result of gang violence and anti-gang fighting; this represents a 32% decrease in killings and injuries from the first quarter, but a 27% increase. percentages compared to the second quarter.”

Almost half of the deaths were attributed to gangs, but about 45% were the result of law enforcement operations.

“At least 106 extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions were carried out by the law enforcement officers… Among the victims were six children aged about ten years,” the report states.


The report also highlighted a 40% increase in acts of violence committed by self-defense groups or unorganized members of the population, known as “Bwa Kale” Justice Movement..

They accounted for about eight percent of all murders.

“At least 122 people – either suspected gang members or accused of common crimes, including animal or phone theft – were killed with extreme brutality by the population”, the report states.

“During these incidents, victims were mutilated with machetes, stoned, beheaded, burned alive or buried alive,” it continued.

“The children were not spared. One of the most violent incidents took place in the town of Les Palmes, in the commune of Petit Goave, where, on September 5, a 15-year-old boy was beaten, accused of stealing a pig. with a machete before being buried alive”.

The report also says that 170 people were abducted in those months, and their continued use sexual violence against women and girls continues.
