Latest Spain floods: Desperate search for ‘many missing’ – as death toll rises and torrential rains on the way | World News

Spain is in mourning today after floods turned village streets into rivers, destroyed homes, disrupted transport and killed at least 95 people in the worst natural disaster to hit the European nation in recent memory.

Storms that started on Tuesday and continued yesterday caused flooding in the south and east of the country, stretching from Malaga to Valencia.

Muddy torrents swept vehicles down the streets at high speed, while debris and household items swirled in the water.

Emergency services in the eastern region of Valencia announced a death toll of 92 people yesterday.

Two others were killed in the neighboring region of Castilla La Mancha, while southern Andalusia reported one death.

“Yesterday was the worst day of my life,” Ricardo Gabaldon, the mayor of Utiel, a town in Valencia, told national broadcaster RTVE.

He said six residents died in the town and others were missing.

“We were caught like rats. Cars and garbage containers flowed through the streets.

“The water was rising three meters,” he said.

The Spanish government has decreed three days of mourning starting today.

“For those who are looking for their loved ones, all of Spain is crying,” Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a televised address.
