The Clark County Auditor identifies 488 damaged ballots from the burned ballot box

The US National Tsunami Warning Center reports that no tsunamis are expected from the offshore earthquake.

While no damage or injuries were reported, local geologists say it’s a good reminder to always be prepared in case of a disaster closer to home.

“It’s just a good reminder that we live in earthquake country,” said Scott Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University. “One day the big one is going to happen, and it’s going to be eight to nine and it’s going to last two to three minutes and it’s going to do a lot of damage. … We have to be ready.”

Wednesday’s earthquake off the coast came as agencies like the Oregon Department of Emergency Management showed how they are preparing for any seismic activity in our area.

“We’re building on an exercise from 2016, Cascadia Rising,” said Patence Winningham, Oregon’s deputy director of emergency management.

KOIN 6 got an inside look at the response center in Salem, where response section manager Traci Naile showed how everything works as team members pretend to be in a major earthquake response scenario.

“The facility we are currently in is the main hub of our emergency coordination center,” Naile said.

Winningham added that bringing all these resources together can really make a difference when responding to a disaster.

“We know that by looking at the resources we have and reviewing our critical infrastructure, we have information that gives us a picture of how bad it could be and where we need to put and prioritize resources using the best information we have she said.
