Halloween Safety Tips for Everyone

DENISON, Texas (KXII) – The night of trick and treating is upon us, but it’s important to make sure that ghosts and ghouls are the only scary part of Halloween.

News 12 spoke with the Denison Police Department and gathered some safety tips to keep in mind — or in hand — as you go door to door Thursday night.

  1. Stay bright — keep flashlights on your person and wear glow sticks and other reflective items to stand out in the dark
  2. Walk smart — cross roads only in well-lit areas or at pedestrian crossings
  3. Stay together — whenever possible, trick or treat in groups or pairs and make sure anyone under 12 is supervised
  4. Stay close — Stick to familiar locations, always stay aware of where you are
  5. Check it out — Don’t eat homemade treats and review all packaged candy at the end of the night for broken seals or choking hazards

But Denison Community Services Officer Jorge Molina says the biggest responsibility of all lies with drivers.

“Drive slowly and with caution,” he said. “There are going to be kids who are excited about Halloween and we want to make sure we keep an eye on them.”

The US Centers for Disease Control said children are more likely to get hit by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year.

That’s why it’s important to drive slowly, drive smart and follow the rules of the road so everyone can get home safely.
