Rating Australian red stocks as Zampa eyes Test debut

Australian white-ball star Adam Zampa wants a place in the upcoming two-Test tour to Sri Lanka in February.

The 32-year-old is yet to make his Test debut and often finds it difficult to develop his red-ball shell, given that he often misses playing Sheffield Shield cricket due to white-ball international duties.

Despite holding him back, Zampa is still one of the nation’s top spinners alongside Mitch Swepson and says he is aiming to earn a full green early next year.

“I’m definitely still working on it,” Zampa said SEN Sports Day.

“I’d love to keep playing Test cricket, it’s a firm goal, so the answer is absolutely I hope to be in that tournament.”

With Zampa throwing his hat in the ring, SEN Cricket’s Adam White has analyzed Australia’s spin stocks and listed his pecking order of those vying for a place in Nathan Lyon’s backline.

While he believes the selectors are likely to go with Matt Kuhnemann in the sub-continent given he is a left-handed bowler and turns the ball from right-handers, White believes the next two best spinners are also off-spinners like Lyon .

Although Victoria’s Todd Murphy has long been considered Lyon’s heir apparent, White believes WA’s Corey Rocchiccioli has passed him recently, with the 27-year-old’s height and high release point impressing many first-class cricket observers .

“Nathan Lyon is still there, so he’s playing,” White said SEN Sports Day.

“Then I think in subcontinental conditions they will go back to Matt Kuhnemann as second.

“And the two leading spinners outside of Nathan Lyon are two out-of-place players and one of them is Todd Murphy. He’s obviously played for Australia a few times now and has generally been seen over the last couple of years as Nathan Lyon’s back-up.

“But there is another one called Corey Rocchiccioli from Western Australia who is an excellent bowler.

“I think at this point, to be fair, he’s probably gone ahead of Todd Murphy.

“He bowls differently than Murphy but still bowls off-spin. I think he probably got ahead of him.

“Then you have Ashton Agar, but I think they probably passed him by.

“Then you look at guys like Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head who can bowl you seven or eight off-spin overs if needed.”

Murphy has a chance to impress the selectors when he plays in Australia A’s match against India A in Mackay, starting on Thursday.
