Sarasota police have released body camera footage showing the crash between the officer and the child

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche provided an update on the tragic accident that occurred Monday evening at approximately 6:30 pm at the intersection of 23rd Street and Maple Avenue, involving an officer Sarasota police and an 8-year-old child.

Sarasota Police Department released video footage Wednesday from both the officer’s body-worn camera and an in-car camera from another officer at the scene. The police department is warning Viewer discretion is advised as footage may be difficult to watch and hear.

According to department officials, the child was on a dirt bike when an officer left the scene of another call. That’s when the officer is said to have hit the child.

The 8-year-old boy was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital. The child remains hospitalized, since Wednesday.

The officer was uninjured and placed on administrative duty.

This remains an active investigation. The Florida Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
