EDMONTON, AB – Connor McDavid is expected to miss two to three weeks with an ankle injurythe Edmonton Oilers said Wednesday.

McDavid, the reigning playoff MVP who led Edmonton to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, was injured Monday night when he tripped and went left skate first into the boards in his first shift in Columbus. The team sent him home to be evaluated, raising fears it could be a long-term absence for hockey’s undisputed best player.

The Oilers would naturally be very cautious with McDavid, especially this early in the season and given their aspirations of going on another long playoff run this spring. The 27-year-old had 10 points in the first nine games before the injury.

McDavid won the Hart Trophy as regular season MVP three times and led the NHL in scoring five times in nine years in the league and finished first in goals once. He could miss between six and 11 games due to the injury.
