According to the La. State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire happened around 10:30 a.m. on Highway 73 near the Geismar Fire Department.

Officials said a man, believed to be the 79-year-old homeowner, was found near the back door of the home, but unfortunately did not survive.

Official identification of the victim and cause of death are pending at the coroner’s office.

The fire remains under investigation.

According to the fire department, the fire started in the bedroom.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, deputies say they cannot rule out potential unsafe heating practices or improperly disposed smoking materials as possible contributing factors.
