Charges filed against St. Thomas man accused of strangling and punching ex in domestic dispute

SF. THOMAS — A man is now facing assault charges after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend after she refused to sleep with him.

In early September, a woman from St. John went to the police to report that she had been assaulted by the man she had been dating for the past six months.

The woman said that on September 5, Mohammed Ahmad asked her to travel to St. Thomas to see him because he was back on his feet. When he got there, he admitted that his story was not true. He then told her that he had to go see his mother, so the couple set out to meet her.

Along the way, the woman said she told Ahmad to take the back way because she knew he was not allowed to meet or be seen with her. However, he saw his father in the Agave area and began to panic. His girlfriend at the time said they eventually decided to go back to his apartment, where he left her and went to see his mother again.

When Ahmad returned home, the woman said she was lying on the couch. He tried to lay on top of her and started pulling her hair hard when she tried to push him off her. She told police she warned her then-boyfriend that she was going to bite him because he was hurting her and told him to stop.

When he refused to stop, the woman said she did indeed bite Ahmad, pushed him and got off the couch. This enraged her ex, who pushed her onto the bed, sat on top of her and began choking her with both hands while verbally abusing her and spitting in her face.

Despite her saying she wanted to go home and telling him she could call one of several family members to pick her up, Ahmad instead convinced her to accompany him to the store for water. However, she was prevented from taking her bag with her on departure.

Upon their return to the apartment, Ahmad asked his then-girlfriend to stay in bed with him. She refused, and he got angry again. The woman told the police that she hid a key under the mattress, and when she found it she headed for the door. This apparently prompted Ahmad to open the bag containing the woman’s belongings and throw a bottle of hair gel at her.

He apparently escalated to punching his now-ex in the arms, breasts and stomach. When she threatened to call the police, he told her to go ahead as she would be dead by the time they arrived. Fearing for her safety, she did not call the police.

Ahmad continued the attack, and when the woman again threatened to report the abuse, he allegedly began recording himself, pointing out the scratches he received during her attempts to defend herself. When the woman was finally able to get out of the apartment, she said she called a friend to report the situation as she walked away. As she did so, she told police Ahmad pulled up next to her in a vehicle, accusing her of being dramatic and begging her to get inside.

The woman said she rejected his pleas and instead waited with a friend until she could take a boat back to St. John.

After that incident, the relationship ended. The woman told police she stopped answering Ahmad’s calls and he started calling her from different numbers. He also began walking past her workplace and smiling at her, which she told police made her uncomfortable. The woman said she spent several nights away from her own home, fearing for her safety.

Ahmad turned himself in to VIPD’s Domestic Violence Unit on October 23. After refusing to provide a statement, he was arrested and charged with simple assault, second-degree assault and disturbing the peace, all misdemeanor domestic violence offenses. He was remanded in custody to await his advice on the rights hearing.

In court last Friday, Magistrate Paula Norkaitis found probable cause to uphold all charges against Ahmad and set bail at $1,000. He must now report to the probation office every week by phone and is prohibited from consuming alcohol or other controlled substances. Ahmad is also now prohibited from illegally contacting his ex-girlfriend and must not visit her workplace unless on legitimate business.

His next court appearance is scheduled for November 8.
