5 people including family of 4 and bride-to-be die in wrong-way crash: ‘Horrible’

FORT WORTH, Texas (WFAA) – Five people died in a wrong-way crash Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas.

Police say a family of four was inside a car traveling the wrong way on the freeway when it hit a pickup truck.

The asphalt on the loop near Marine Creek Reservoir is still charred.

Even at 3:30 in the morning, witnesses said they could see smoke from miles away.

“I saw the car that was no longer burning, just unrecognizable. It was so burnt,” one viewer described.

Fort Worth police say a family of four, two parents and two children, were inside the small car going the wrong way on Northwest Loop 820.

All four died when they hit a truck and their car caught fire.

The truck driver survived, but police say the passenger, his fiance, did not.

“This is a man who lost the love of his life,” said Officer Tracy Carter, a Fort Worth police spokeswoman. “To have six people and one person survive, you have to ask yourself, ‘Why me?'”

Carter says police don’t yet know why the car drove eastbound in the westbound loop lanes.

“When you have a head-on collision, you double those forces involved,” said Kyle Clay of the Fort Worth Fire Department.

Clay called the crash “horrific.”

“From time to time, you will come across a certain call. You might get two or three in your career that really stick with you. I would think this is one of them,” Clay added.

The coroner has not yet publicly identified the victims; it may take longer since the fire burned everything.

“I see all these first responders go and grab the stretchers, go and grab the defibrillators and come back with this look on their face like they know it’s too late,” said the crash witness.

That section of the roadway was closed for about six hours on Sunday.

The family of the woman killed in the truck says she got engaged to her fiance earlier this month.
