WATCH: Video shows driver hit Nashville police car during traffic stop

Nashville authorities shared shocking footage of a driver crashing into a patrol car as an officer initiated a traffic stop early Tuesday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., a Nashville police officer I saw a silver Dodge Challenger driving at a high rate of speed near downtown Nashville.

Officials said the officer then turned on his lights and attempted a traffic stop. However, the driver delayed to stop and started driving recklessly and doing donuts on the road.

After completing several donuts, the vehicle was in front of the officer’s patrol car, where it is seen accelerating and hitting the officer’s car head-on.

A driver is facing charges after he crashed into a patrol car while an officer was trying to pull him over in Nashville early Tuesday morning. (Nashville Metropolitan Police Department)

Authorities said the officer was injured during the incident and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and later released.

The driver then drove behind the patrol car, continued to do donuts and then fled the scene.

The driver, who police identified as 22-year-old Carlos Esquivel, surrendered to police downtown early Tuesday morning.

Nashville police said Esquivel is accused of aggravated assault on a police officer, evading arrest, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.

He was booked into jail and is being held on $27,500 bond.
